Leaders in the CBD industry call the new legislation a “game changer” and “nothing short of seismic.”
All the major obstacles that face the CBD industry result from cannabis not being fully legal.
CBD, and CBD Oil, can be found in cosmetics, shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, lattes, vitamins, cookies, gummies, teas, beer, ice cream, massage oils, and even dog treats.
Congress passed the Farm Bill last week, and the president’s signature would legalize hemp-derived CBD, a compound which is widely used for relaxation and to treat stress, anxiety, insomnia and inflammation. CBD is also the key ingredient in Epidiolex, a medication that is the first cannabis-derived drug approved by the FDA to treat epilepsy.
The formal signing of the current legislation would potentially give major companies like Coca-Cola Co. a legal way to experiment with cannabis in the U.S. Coke has said it’s interested in CBD for “functional wellness” drinks, as consumers turn away from sugar. Sales from CBD products in the U.S. are expected to rise to $5.7 billion in 2019, almost 10 times that of this year.
With the growing and selling of hemp now legal, easier availability to CBD means more substantial trials and more definitive research into its purported health benefits.
